A THESIS BY PROSENJIT ROY Student No. 1605392 Registration No. 1605392 Session: 2016-2017 Semester: January– June, 2018 Submitted to Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding Hajee Mohammad Danesh science and Technology University, Dinajpur In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDINGen_US
An experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh during 2016-2017 to develop biometrical method based on some morphological traits for characterization of the selected rice variety. Twelve rice varieties were used in the experiment and they were collected from different parts of the Bangladesh. The experimental result demonstrated a wide variation among the twelve cultivars in many morphological characters like plant height, panicle length, effective grain, non effective grain, grains per panicle, total seed weight, seed length, seed breadth, seed flatness etc. In the genotype KALOSURU and KALOGIRA was observed shaded black or deep black in color. On the other hand RADHUNI PAGOL was light brown with golden in color and RANJIT, FILLIPINE KATHARI, BADSHAVOG, BOLDER, CHINIGURA, KATHARIVOG, PAIJAM, SADA KATHARI, JAISTHA KATHARI was observed golden in color. Seed weight per panicle was observed greater than 3.8gm in the genotype RANJIT. FILLIPINE KATHARI, BADSHAVOG, BOLDER, CHINIGURA, KATHARIVOG, PAIJAM, SADA KATHARI, JAISTHA KATHARI had less than the seed weight 3.8gm. Among the variety KALOSURU is the tallest variety on the other hand RANJIT is the smallest variety and other variety are moderately dwarf. Panicle length of KALOSURU is the highest and followed by RANJIT, KALOGIRA, RADHUNI PAGOL, JAISTHAKATHARI, smallest panicle length was observed in SADAKATHARI. Effective grain and grains per panicle is the major attribute to select a variety. RANJIT have highest no. of grains per panicle and effective grains per panicle, on the other hand SADAKATHARI have both lowest no. of grains per panicle and effective grain per panicle. Other characteristics like seed length, seed breadth, 100 seed weight was found highest in RANJIT. KATHARIVOG can be identified which seed weight is less < 3.8, Seed length is less than <6.6, Seed breadth is less than > =2.1 and Grains per panicle is grater than <172 and which have golden seed color. The seed color of PAIJAM is golden color, seed length is grater than 6.6,seed flatness is less than 1.9 respectively. KATHARIVOG have more than 172 grains/panicle on the other hand seed breadth, seed weight of BADSHAVOG has grater than 2.1 and 1.1 respectively. Based on this variation, a classification and regression tree (CART) has been developed to identify the rice cultivar easily. The classification tree produced by CART analysis used six morphological variables to distinguish the twelve rice cultivars. The variables are seed color, seed breadth, seed length, seed weight and seed flatness, grains per panicle and the mean variation of these characters.en_US
