Abstract
An experiment was conducted at the research field of the Department of Genetics and
Plant Breeding, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU),
Dinajpur, under the supervision of Genetics and Plant Breeding Department, (HSTU),
Dinajpur during March, 2017 to June, 2017. The experiment was set in Randomized
Complete block Design (RCBD). The major objectives of the experiment were to study
heritability and genetic advance to evaluate the experimental hybrids. Two check variety
occupying accession number 960 (Green finger, Lal teer seed), 1 (BARI dherosh-1) and
eight F1 hybrids occupying accession number 6 (Green finger × Komol), 9 (Local,
Rangpur × Komol), 10 (Local, Rangpur × Green finger), 14 (Shakti × Green finger), 15
(Shakti × Local, Rangpur), 19 (R&D seg × JK haritha), 20 (AMO-215 × JK haritha), 21
(AMO-215 × JK haritha) were used in the experiment. The study revealed a wide range
of genetic variation among the accession number for all the characters studied. Highest
plant height, no. of leaves/plant, fruit/plant, weight of fruit, length of fruit, diameter of
fruit, seed/pod and 100 seed weight were found among the accession number in the
study. The highest observation of fruit/plant (45.22), weight of fruit (150.44 g), length of
fruit (17.80 cm), diameter of fruit (6.84 cm) and 100 seed weight (8.33 g) was recorded
in accession number 21. The heritability estimation varied from 27.657%-97.481%. High
heritability was found in number of leaves at 100 days (97.481%). The highest genetic
advance was recorded in the plant height at 100 days (22.392). Acc. No. 21 showed the
highest heterobeltiosis, average heterosis and standard heterosis in fruit/plant, fruit length
and no.of leaves/plant, which is desirable for the exploitation of a commercial hybrid.
Acc. No. 14 showed the highest heterosis in the weight of fruit and diameter of fruit in
all the types of heterosis. Acc. No. 15 showed significant positive heterosis over better
parent and mid parent in 100 seed weight. Acc. No. 10 showed significant haterosis over
mid parent and check variety but Acc. No. 9 showed the highest heterobeltiosis in the
character seeds/pod. Plant height showed significant positive correlation with no. of
leaves/plant, fruit weight, and seed/fruit. fruit length, fruit diameter, 100 seed weight also
showed positive correlation with plant height. Fruits/ plant showed significant positive
correlation coefficients with fruit weight, fruit diameter, 100 seed weight in both
genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients. Increase in fruits/ plant increased fruit
weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, seeds/ fruit, 100 seed weight. So, these characters
transpired as the yield contributing characters. On the other hand 1st flower initiation
days showed significant positive correlation with 50% flower initiation days. So, the
breeder should take into consideration of these characters for commercial exploitation of
hybrid variety in okra. Acc. No. 21, 14, 10, 9 may be exploited as commercial F1 hybrids.
It may be concluded that the accession number 21 proved itself as the topmost promising
hybrid variety and can be tested in different agro-ecological zones in Bangladesh.
