Abstract
A field experiment was carried out at research field, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and
Technology University, Dinajpur, during the period from December, 2016 to April, 2017 to
assess the effect of inorganic fertilizers and biochar for the growth and yields of rice (BRRI
dhan 29). The experiment was laid with five (5) treatments i.e. T1 (full dosses of N, P, K and S),
T2 (Biochar 10 tha-1
), T3 (Biochar 10 tha-1 + ½ N, P, K and S of the recommended doses), T4
(Biochar 7.5 tha-1 + ½ N, P, K and S of the recommended doses) and T5 (Biochar 5 tha-1 + ½ N,
P, K and S of the recommended doses) having three replications in RCBD. The maximum plant
height was in treatments T1 (103.0 cm) which was statistically similar to the treatment T3 (99.93
cm) and the lowest plant height was observed in treatment T5 (90.80 cm). The number of tillers
hill-1 was highest (26.10) in the treatment T1 which was statistically similar to the treatment
T3(25.17) and the least datum of tillers hill-1 was produced in the treatment T2 (18.43). The
highest panicle length (24.89 cm) was found in the treatment T3 which was statistically similar to
the treatment T1 (24.75 cm) and the lowest panicle length (19.46 cm) was found in the treatment
T2. The highest number of spikelet hill-1 (14.30) was found in the treatment T3 which was
statistically similar to the treatment T1 (13.87). The lowest number of spikelet hill-1
(10.80) was
found in the treatment T2. The highest number of grains panicle-1
(195.4) was found in the
treatment T3 which was statistically similar to the treatment T1 (192.5) and the lowest number of
grains panicle-1
(160.9) was found in the treatment T4. The highest 1000-grain weight (25.53g)
was found in the treatment which was statistically similar to the treatment T1 (24.17g) and the
lowest number of 1000-grain weight (21.17) was found in the treatment T2. The treatment T1
recorded the highest grain yield (7.463 t ha-1
) which was statistically similar to the treatments T3
(7.420 t ha-1
) and the lowest grain yield (4.223 t ha-1
) was recorded in the treatment T2. The
treatment T1 recorded the highest straw yield (9.923 t ha-1
) which was statistically similar to the
treatments T3 (9.867 t ha-1
) and the lowest straw yield (5.61tha-1
) was recorded in the treatment
T2. The highest biological yield (17.287 tha-1
) was measured in the treatment T3 and the lowest
biological yield was recorded in the treatment T2 (9.84t ha-1
). From the above discussion the
highest yield was in the treatment T1 with the application of full dosses of N, P, K and S and the
results of yield and yield contributing attributes were statistically significant and similar in the
treatment T3 with the application of biochar 10 tha
-1 + ½ N, P, K and S of the recommended
doses. So the application of biochar 10 tha-1
+ ½ N, P, K and S should be recommended to use in
the farmers field which was saved 50% of inorganic fertilizers as compared to the other
treatments.
