    EFFECT OF PAPAYA LEAF JUICE ON PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE AND MICROBIAL LOAD OF BROILER

    Abstract
    A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of papaya leaf juice supplementation of production performance of broiler diets, dressing percentage (%), mortality (%), microbial load in faeces and cost effectiveness in commercial broiler. A total of 120, day old broilers (Cobb 500) were randomly assigned to four dietary treatment groups as T0, T1, T2 and T3, each group consisted of 3 replications containing 10 birds in each replication. Four dietary treatments were considered: T0 (Control fed with commercial diet), T1 (Commercial diet with growth promoter (Amino solve) @1ml/1L drinking water), T2 (Commercial diet with 7.5% papaya leaf juice in drinking water) and T3 (Commercial diet with 15% papaya leaf juice in drinking water). The results showed that total feed intake was non-significant (P>0.05) among the dietary treatment groups. The present study revealed that papaya leaf juice had significant (P<0.05) effect on final body weight, average daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) in broiler. The initial live weight of broiler of different treatment groups was more or less similar. The final live weight (g) was significantly (P<0.05) higher in T1 (2063.33±27.28) and T2 (2060.00±5.77) group, followed by T3 (1983.33±6.67) and T0 (1896.67±47.02) group respectively. The total live weight gain was found higher in T1 group (2023.33±26.53) where it was 2020.67±5.81, 1944.00±6.51 and 1857.67±46.49 for T2, T3 and T0 respectively. The broiler of T1 (72.26±1.26) and T2 (72.16±0.28) group was significantly (P<0.05) higher in average daily live weight gain compared to T0 (66.34±2.21) and T3 (69.42±0.31).The lowest and best feed conversion ratio was found in T1 group (1.30±0.02) and T2 (1.29±0.02) and the highest was in T0 group (1.44±0.01) while it was 1.34±0.01 in T3 group. The dressing percentage (%) in T0, T1, T2 and T3 was 68.06±1.44, 70.51±1.65, 71.02±0.74 and 70.81±0.68 respectively which was not significantly (P>0.05) differed among the groups. It is found that Salmonella and E. coli load was high in the faeces of T0, T1 group broiler but was low in faeces of T2 and T3 group. Profit/ Kg live weight (taka) was 20.43 and 19.46 in T2 and T1 which were higher than T0 (11.85) and T3 group (15.97). Papaya leaf juice @7.5% in drinking water may be better than 15% papaya leaf juice in case of broiler. So papaya leaf can be added to the broiler feed as natural growth promoter alternative to commercial chemical growth promoter.
