This chapter contains academic review, conceptual structure and the review of related literature. It will explore various aspects of efficiency such as inputs and outputs, financial resources, physical infrastructure and other factors influencing internal efficiency of secondary schools. 2.2 Factors affecting internal efficiency in secondary schools. Khatete (2018) carried out on the influence of school-based policies on internal efficiency in public day secondary schools in Nyatike Sub County, Kenya. The schoolbased policies analyzed were found to affect the internal efficiency in education in public secondary schools. The government‟s policy of no repetition, was found be flowed by all the schools as they had their own students‟ grade to grade promotion policy based on students‟ performance in internal examinations. All schools visited were found to be using exams for promotions. Ninety point zero three percent of the students responded that rules put by schools on student grade to grade affects their wellbeing and stay in school. Sixty one point five three percent of the students sampled believed student grade to grade policy has an impact on repetition of students. On time management policy, a majority of the schools did not have strategic plans to guide the operations in schools. However, the schools had timetables as required by the ministry of education. No effort was put in place to assist weak students in bettering in their academics to meet the set school targets for promotion.en_US
To assess the internal efficiency of secondary schools in Dinajpur district, northern region of Bangladesh using purposive sampling technique for the collection of data in this study. The researcher targeted four (4) secondary schools out of the different secondary schools in the district. A sample of 250 students and 50 teachers were selected for the study using simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, binary logistic regression and Pearson Chi-Square. Results showed that a significant relationship existed between the internal efficiency (grade point average) and adequacy of physical resources, reasons for chosen the school, factors responsible for low grade, and teaching methods. The study also concluded that age and sex have influence with the internal efficiency. Findings also revealed that student‟s family background such as father‟s education, mother‟s education, family income and family expenditure were found to be significant with the internal efficiency. Based on the findings the study concluded that Governmental schools are better according to nongovernmental schools. The study also showed that availability of physical facilities encouraged meaningful learning and teaching. Improving the physical facilities can help to improve the internal efficiency (grade point average). The researcher recommends that the government and education stakeholders ensure that teaching/ learning materials and school physical facilities are availed sufficiently in all secondary schools, to improve the internal efficiency of secondary schools in the provision of secondary education.en_US
