Bangladesh is a agrobased country with land and very high population. Due to our huge population we have to produce more food in our limited land. To meet the increased demand of food, farmers are growing more cereal crops. Due to the high population pressure, the total cultivable land is decreasing day by day for housing. So, at present the cultivation of pulse has gone to marginal land because any one does not want to use his fertile land in pulse cultivation. Pulse cultivation is also decreasing because of its low yield & low production. Besides this long term cereal crop cultivation also affects soil fertility and productivity which could be overcome by growing pulses.en_US
The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of Nitrogen and biofertilizer on the morphophysiological traits and yield performance of mungbean. The experiment was conducted in research field of the Department of Crop Physiology and Ecology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, during the summer season from February to June 2011. Five mungbean varieties viz. BARI Mung-2, BARI Mung-3, BARI Mung-4, BARI Mung-5 and BARI Mung-6 and three fertilizer viz. nitrogen (urea), biofertilizer, and a control were used as treatment. The experiment was laid out in Randomized complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Experiment showed that most of the morphophysiological characters, such as plant height, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, leaf dry weight, total dry matter, number of nodule plant”',leaf area increased significantly due to application of nitrogen. The above parameters were the maximum when the mungbean varieties were treated with nitrogen followed by biofertilizer. Yield and yield contributing characters such as number of flowers plant’, number of pods plant”, pod length (cm), pod dry weight (g/plant), number of seeds pod", 100 seed weight, seed yield (g/plant), seed yield (kg/ha), Harvest index(%) etc. were increased significantly by the application of nitrogen and biofertilizer over the control. But abscission (%) was decreased significantly due to application of nitrogen and biofertilizer. BARI Mung-5 performed better than other 4 varieties in respect of plant height, root dry weight, leaf dry weight, total dry matter, leaf area, pods plant’, pod length (cm), pod dry weight (g/plant), number of seeds pod’, 100 seed weight, seed yield (g/plant), seed yield (kg/ha).The variety BARI Mung-5 and BARI Mung-6 had higher harvest index (%) than BARI Mung-4, BARI Mung-3 and BARI Mung-2. The maximum seed yield was found in BARI Mung-5 with nitrogen and minimum seed yield was found in BARI Mung-2 in control.en_US
