Abstract
A field experiment was conducted on thirty F; genotypes of chilli (Capsicum
annuum L.) at the experimental field of Genetics and Plant Breeding
Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University,
Dinajpur to study on variability and selection in F; and F, generations in chilli
(Capsicum annuum L.) during October, 2011 to April, 2013. Data were
recorded on five important characters viz. Fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit
weight, number of fruits and yield per plant. It was observed that there was
significant variations found among the entries for fruit length (48.23-71.61),
fruit diameter (8.58-10.69), fruit weight (0.876-3.301), number of fruits (120.8-
272) and most important characters yield per plant (138.09-815.32). Best on
those remarkable variations among the 30 F3 entries under 5 important
characteristics 15 entries were recorded on randomly of each single cross and
selected for F, progenies. In Fy progenies it was also observed significant
variations among the entries for fruit length (47.03-79.87), fruit diameter (7.95-
12.92), fruit weight (1.46-3.47), number of fruits (169-350.1), yield per plant
(277.028-1106.326). The observations were recorded on 16 randomly selected
plants in each single cross of Fy progenies in chilli. Based on the findings of the
present investigation 8 entries (08-328-1, 08-316-4, 08-207-13, 08- 106-6, 08-
118-10, 08-302-14, 08-37-4 and 08-158-5) were selected as better parents. 08-
328-1 was selected first position based on highest yield per plant (1106.326),
highest fruit weight (3.477), highest fruit diameter (12.922), highest fruit length
(79.879) and 3™ highest number of fruits (318.2). 08-316-4 entries selected a
positions based on highest number of fruits (350.1), 2" highest in yield per
plant (1014.961), 2™ highest in fruit diameter (12.137), 3" highest in fruit
weight (2.897) & 9" highest in fruit length (60.889). Similarly 08-207-13
selected 3" position, 08-106-06 (4), 08-118-1 (5™), 08-302-14 (6"), 08-37-4
(7") and 08-158-5 (8'") were selected better parents & suggested for further Fs
generations.
