Abstract
An experiment was conducted in the Soil Science research field of Hajee
Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during the
period of December 2016 to April 2017 in order to evaluate the effect of
phosphorus fertilizer placement methods on the growth and yield of wheat. The
experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with
five treatments and four replications. The experiment comprised of five different
methods of phosphorus fertilizer application viz. T1 {Broadcast (Treated as
control)}, T2 (In between two rows), T3 (5 cm. apart from rows), T4 (Below seed in
rows) and T5 (Mixed with seed). The statistical analysis of phosphorus placement
methods exhibited significant differences to the plant height, number of tillers m-2
,
spike length, number of spikelet spike-1, number of grain spike-1, grain yield, straw
yield, biological yield except 1000 grain weight. The results revealed that the
treatment (T5) where phosphorus fertilizer mixed with seed in rows produced taller
plants (95.97cm), more tillers m-2 (349.9), lengthy spikes (9.25 cm), more spikelet
spike -1 (21.90), more grains spike-1 (49.78), higher 1000 grain weight (59.05g),
satisfactory grain yield (4.86 t ha-1), higher straw yield (5 t ha-1) and biological
yield (9.86 t ha-1). The unit increase in grain yield was positively correlated with
the increased values of crop parameters by extending the values of plant. The
findings of the study showed that the performance of the treatment T5 (Mixed with
seed) was the best among the other treatments. Therefore, the overall results
indicate that the placement method of phosphorus fertilizer mixed with seed can be
more effective and economic for wheat production.
