    Abstract
A field experiment was carried out at the Agroforestry and Environment research field, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur, during March to June 2013 to find out the performance of three mungbean varieties under two production systems viz mungbean in sole cropping and mungbean in mango based agroforestry system. The experiment was conducted in newly established mango (Amropally) orchard. The experiment included two recommended modern mungbean varieties viz, BARI Mung-5, BARI Mung-6 and one mungbean local variety),. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two replications. Significantly the highest plant height of (24.65 cm) was found in BARI Mung-6 followed by (21.98 cm) BARI Mung5 and the lowest plant height of (15.73 cm) was observed in mungbean local variety at 40 DAS. Significantly the maximum number of leaves plant! 20.93 was recorded in BARI Mung-5 followed by (17.62) BARI Mung-6 and the minimum number of leaves plant’ was recorded (12.92) in mungbean local variety at 40 DAS. The longest pod (6.77 cm) was found in BARI Mung-6. The highest number of pod plant (19.42) was found in BARI Mung-5. The maximum number of seeds (9.92) was found in BARI Mung-5 followed by (9.92) BARI Mung-6. The highest yield of 1.29 t ha! was found in BARI Mung-5 followed by 1.20 t ha" in BARI Mung-6 and the lowest yield of 0.88 tha'was observed in mungbean local variety, respectively. In case of production system significantly the longest pod length (6.11 cm) was recorded in mungbean + mango based agroforestry system and the shortest pod length (5.82) was recorded in sole cropping of mungbean. The mungbean yield tha’ was measured and the highest yield of 1.18 t ha'was found in sole cropping of mungbean. On the other hand the lowest yield of 1.06 t ha’ was observed in mungbean + mango based agroforestry system. Finally the mungbean yield t ha’ was measured and the highest yield of 1.36 t ha was found in open + BARI Mung-5 treatment combination. On the other hand the lowest yield of 0.82 t ha! was found in mango + Mungbean local variety treatment combination, respectively. It can be concluded that BARI Mung-5 with sole cropping as well as BARI Mung-6 performed better than other varieties, but BARI Mung-5 could be suitable for mango based agroforestry system.
