Biochemical and Physiological Investigation for Quality ofSome Selected Rice Cultivars Produced in Piedmont Plain Soil of Bangladesh

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted to assess the Biochemical and Physiological
characteristics to screen out the yielding potentiality and grain quality ofsome cultivars
( VI Bashful, V2 Posursail, V3 Gochi, V4 Taipi, V5 Paiza, V6 Lafaya, V7 Jirashail, V8
BRRJdhan 28 and V9 Banglamoti). Proline and chlorophyll were estimated from leaves
and protein, starch, moisture and some minerals like Fe, Zn, and Ca contents were
determined from the grains. Grain characters ie grain shape, size; length, breath and
length/breath were also measured for screening out the popular rice cultivar(s). Most of
the varieties showed low levels of low temperature tolerance during the growth stage,
the exceptions being some varieties of Poshurshail from Hobigonj, Pariza and Jirashail,
which were tolerant or moderately tolerant, to low temperature due to accumulate
higher amounts of proline. Lafaya and BRRIdhan 28 performed very poorly at low

synthesis in some rice cultivars was observed. Varieties from Hobigonj (Poshurshail)
and Joypurhat(Pariza) showed consistent tolerance to low temperature at all growth
stages. These varieties are potentially important gene donors for breeding and genetic
studies. So the breeders can consider these cultivars during their varietals improvement.
V2, V4 and V6 was found having lowest starch and VI, V5, V6 and V2 found higher
quantity of protein which is very important finding for selecting the variety for quality.
The study summarized that, not a single cultivars was found which containing all the
