Abstract
An experiment was conducted in the research laboratory of the department of
Agricultural Chemistry, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology
University, Dinajpur, during March 2011- March 2012 to study the effects of
aqueous leaf extracts of some herbal plants on the germination and seedling
growth of vegetables. The treatments were T, -Water or control,T,;-Aqueous
extract of basak,T,= Aqueous extract of ulot komal,T;=Aqueous extract of neem,
T, = Aqueous extract of bel,T;-Aqueous extract of akando and Ts=Aqueous
extract of horitoki. The experimentwas laid out following CRD with three
replications. Cucumber, lady’s finger and yard long bean were selected.
Significantly the fastest 50% germination occurred with horitoki (Ts = 4.33 days)
followed by T, T3, Ty and T; where as the slowest 50% germination occurred with
control (Tp =6.33 days). At 20 DAS, 25 DAS and 30 DAS the highest shoot length
was recorded in case of seed treated with horitoki leaf extract (44.27 cm, 62.17 cm
and 83.10 cm, respectively). Horitoki showed the best result (8. 67 cm) whereas
control showed the lowest root length (5.73 cm) followed by seed treated with
basak leaf extract
