dc.description | Salmonella is a genus of short plump rod-shaped, Gram-negative, non-spore forming, non
capsulated, aerobic and facultative anaerobic, predominantly motile enterobacteria with
diameters around 0.7 to 1.5 pm, lengths 2 to 4 ym, and flagellated (peritrichous) and
classified under the family Enterobacteriaceae (OIE Manual, 2006). The disease may
occur in fowl, duck, pigeon, quail, insects, rodents and other animals and bird either in
acute or chronic form by one or more member of the genus Salmonella, under the family
Enterobacteriaceae (Calnek et a/., 1997). Salmonellosis is also an important bacterial
disease of pigeon and quail, characterized by well-known auricular changes, diarrhoea and
nervous disorders in pigeons and quail (Samad, 2005). | en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Salmonellosis is a common problem in poultry farms of our country. Indiscriminate use
. of antibiotic to control the disease results drug resistance and limits the therapeutic
possibilities in the treatment of the disease. A total of 93 samples were collected from
liver, spleen and intestine of Duck, Pigeon and Quail; either dead or sick, brought for
antibiogram study following isolation of Salmonellae from those birds during the period
from December, 2009 to June, 2010 from three upazilla of Dinajpur District of
Bangladesh. The collected samples were inoculated to different cultural media(NA, MC
agar, EMB agar, Simmons Citrate agar, SS agar, BGA) for the determination of cultural
characteristics of the organism. | en_US |
