ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF PASTEURELLA MULTOCIDA FROM DUCKS AT DINAJPUR DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH AND THEIR ANTIBIOGRAM STUDY

Abstract
The present research work was performed for the isolation and identification of
Pasteurella multocida from ducks and demonstration of antibiotic sensitivity of the
selected isolates. The entire research work was conducted primarily in the
Bacteriology laboratory of the Department of Microbiology, Hajee Mohammad
Danesh University (HSTU), Dinajpur. The samples were aseptically carried out to
the laboratory and were subjected to different cultural, morphological and
biochemical examinations. For this purpose, a total of 20 samples (liver, spleen,
heart) were collected from suspected sick ducks (10 samples) and suspected dead
ducks (10 samples) from different selected areas of Dinajpur district. From these
samples, 3 (30 %) from suspected sick ducks and 4 (40 %) from suspected dead
ducks were found to be positive for Pasteurella multocida. The isolated organism
from ducks produced whitish, opaque, round, flat, translucent colonies of sticky
mucoid or dry consistency about 1-3 mm in diameter on Nutrient Agar and
whitish, opaque, round, translucent colonies without hemolysis on Blood Agar
and were able to ferment dextrose, mannitol and sucrose but unable to ferment
lactose and maltose on biochemical examinations. From the antibiogram study, it
was revealed that among the isolated Pateurella organism from ducks, 100% were
highly sensitive to Ciprofloxacin and 86% Levofloxacillin, 71% were to
Clindamycin and 14% were to Gentamycin. 71% were moderately sensitive to
Doxycicline, 86% were to Gentamycin, 15% were to Clindamycin, 15% were to
Neomycin and 33% were to Erythromycin. On the other hand 57% were less
sensitive to Erythromycin; 17% were less sensitive to Tetracycline; 14% were to
Doxycicline and 8% were to Bacitracin. 100% isolates were resistant to
Amoxycillin, where 83% were resistant to Tetracycline; 92% were resistant to
Bacitracin, and 20% were resistant to Erythromycin.
