The word "Qutum or kutum" has given rise to the English word "Cotton". The sanskrit words kurpasa and karpasum denotes cotton (Watt, 1907). Cotton, a major agricultural crop, is growing more than 60 countries of the world providing employment and income to the millions of people. Bangladesh has a glorious historical reference to growing superfine quality of cotton. The world famous "muslin" was greeted in every part of the earth. After independence 1972, a comprehensive development program was taken in the country. Now it meets 6-8% of our national demand but has enough feasibility to grow more. It is a multipurpose crop and raw materials for the industry. There are 152 yarn and textile mills in Bangladesh. Every year 6,00,000 to 7,00,000 bales of medium and long staple cotton fibre are used in these mills, but our production is only 75,000 to 90,000 bales, maximum cotton is imported from abroad at the expense of costly foreign currency (Anon, 2001)en_US
Study with the different varieties of cotton and its pests indicate that the varieties having dense hairs and trichoms e.g. CB-9 and CB-5 are more tolerant to sucking pest’s rather smooth varieties. But, bollworms and whiteflies have the positive co-relation with the hairs. The serrated leaved variety SR-05 is potential enough for its less canopy volume and well ventilated bottom environment. More over, a positive relation of predators is found with the abundance of preys. Variety with desirable plant height, number of bolls, boll size and individual boll weight plays an important role for substantial economic return.en_US
