Chillies are the fruits or berries of plants belonging to the genus Capsicum of the Nightshade family, Solanaceae. The genus Capsicum consists of about 25 wild and 5 domesticated species. The five domesticated species are Capsicum annuum L., Capsicum frutescens L., Capsicum chinense Jacq., Capsicum baccatum L., and Capsicum pubescens R & P. (IBPGR, 1983). Of the domesticated species, Capsicum annuum is the most economically important and includes both mild and pungent fruit types and native to tropical and temperate regions of the American. dc.description.abstractA study was conducted with cotyledon of chilli as explants for regeneration on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of auxins and cytokines. For the callus induction, three different combinations of growth regulators viz. 0.05 mg/L kinetin + 1.5 mg/L 2, 4-D, 0.5 mg/L kinetin + 2.0 mg/L 2, 4-D and 1.0 mg/L kinetin + 3.0 mg/L 2, 4-D were used. The highest percentage of callus (96.29%) was obtained in MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L kinetin+3.0 mg/L 2, 4-D within 12.66 days. Among three genotypes, C1013 showed the best performance on callus induction. On the other hand, cotyledon induced shoot bud in different combinations of MS medium supplemented with different combinations like 0.1 mg/L IAA+5.0 mg/L BAP, 1.0 mg/L IAA+2.0 mg/L BAP and 0.1 mg/L IAA+ 0.1 mg/L BAP. Cotyledon showed the best performance in 1.0 mg/L IAA+2.0 mg/L BAP in terms of percent shoot regeneration (92.59%) and number of callus showing shoot (16.66). The shoot bud showed the best performance in MS+1.0 mg/L IAA+2.0 mg/L BAP combination and C1013 also showed the remarkable performance on shoot regeneration. On the other hand, root regeneration (86.66%) was found on MS+3.0 mg/L IBA +1.0 mg/L BAP combination and C1011 showed the best performance on root regeneration.en_US
