CHEMICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF SOME WEEDS OF VEGETABLE CROPS WITH THEIR GERMINATION AND GROWTH EFFECTS

Abstract
An experiment was conducted on naturally occurring growth substances in aqueous
extracts of some common weeds viz., Lazzabati(T)), Tita Begun(T2), Foska begun (T3),
Bichuti (T4), Kanainala (Ts), Thankuni (T¢), Shwetodron (T7) for each vegetable crops
such as Radish, Tomato and Amaranth with the attempt for chemical investigation on
effective weed extract. The aqueous extracts of Tita Begun (Solanum torvum) and Foska
Begun (Physalis heterophylla) significantly reduced and delayed germination of radish,
tomato and amaranth seeds compared with control. The highest germination percentage
consequently 100%, 93.20% and 92.80% and maximum growth of radish, tomato and
amaranth in seeds treated with control. The effect of aqueous extract of Tita Begun
(Solanum torvum) showed the lowest germination percentage, reduced root and shoot
length of radish, tomato and amaranth seedlings. Similarly, the aqueous extract of Foska
Begun (Physalis heterophylla) also showed the lowest germination percentage, reduced
the root and shoot length of radish, tomato and amaranth seedlings. The Thin Layer
Chromatography (TLC) examination of chloroform and ethyl alcohol extracts of Tita
Begun (Solanum torvum) was showed four distinct compounds at Hexane: Ethylacetate
(8:1, v/v, 4:1, v/v) and chloroform crude extract of Foska Begun (Physalis heterophylla)
showed five individual compounds and ethyl alcohol extract of Foska Begun showed four
different compounds at Hexane: Ethylacetate (10:1, v/v, 7:1, v/v). Crude compounds
were purified and isolated by column chromatography. One of them initially was
indicated steroid type compound by Liberman-Berchand reaction. 'H-NMR and study
were indicated that the fractions were probably steroid and triterpinoid types compounds
which were discussed in details in Results and discussion.
