Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a herbaceous, edible tuber crop belonging to the family Solanaceae. Its center of origin is said to be Peru and Bolivia (Ahmad, 1977). This crop was introduced to Indo-Pak-Bangladesh by the Portuguese in the early seventeenth century only about 40 years after its first introduction to Europe (Swaminathan, 1958). In Bangladesh, the cultivation of potato has been widely started in the late 19" century (Pushkarnath, 1969). It is a staple food next to rice and wheat grown almost all over the world and also popular as vegetables as well as a main item of preparing various food and confectioneries. It is a promising food crop along with the cheapest source of carbohydrates and furnishes appreciable amounts of vitamin B, and vitamin C as well as some minerals. It also produces the highest dry matter per unit area compared to that of other crops (Thomson and’ Kelly, 1957).en_US
Effect of different management practices either alone or in combination on varietal performance for controlling the aphid vector against PLRV and PVY in seed potato production was studied in the field during 2006-2007. The experiment was carried out taking three varieties viz. Granola, Diamant and Cardinal, and eight management practices viz. Asataf 75SP, Kitchen ash, Neem extract, Furadan 5G, Furadan 5G + Asataf 75SP, Furadan 5G + Kitchen ash, Furadan 5G + Neem extract and Control. All the management practices reduced the incidence of aphid vector population and produced good effect on growth and yield of potato. The highest incidence of aphid infested plant (5.33/plot) as recorded in control plots of Diamant and that were absent in all the varieties with the management practice(s), Asataf 75SP and Furadan 5G + Asataf 75SP. The highest incidence of symptom bearing plant (7.67/plot) was observed in control plots of Diamant and that was the lowest in Granola (0.51/plot) with foliar application of Asataf 75SP. The highest yield (35.84 ton/ha) was observed in Granola in combination with Asataf 75SP and lowest (24.5 ton/ha) in the control plots of Diamant. The highest yield loss (31.76%) due to PLRV and PVY was recorded in the variety Diamant. The maximum net return (Tk. 384399.28) with BCR = 3.51 was obtained in the plots of Granola which received foliar application of Asataf 75SP, while minimum net return (Tk. 100819.11) with BCR = 1.4 was obtained in the control plots of the variety Diamant.en_US
