YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTING CHARACTERISTICS OF MUSTARD AS INFLUENCED BY BORON

Abstract
The experiment was conducted in the research farm and laboratory of Crop
Physiology and Ecology Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and
Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh, during the period from November,
2017 to April, 2018 to study the performance of mustard varieties under different
dose of boron fertilizer. The experiment was comprised with two sets of factors
namely A: Four boron fertilizer dose like, B1 = control treatment, B2 = 1.15 kg B
ha-1, B3 = 1.7 kg B ha-1 and B4 = 2.3 kg B ha-1; B: three varieties of mustard such
as, V1 = BARI Sharisa 9, V2 = BARI Sharisa 14 and V3 = BARI Sharisa 15. The
experiment was laid out in a two factor randomized complete block design
(RCBD) with three replications. Application of 2.3 kg B ha-1 (B4) fertilizer dose
took the highest days to attain their phenological stages and produced the tallest
plant, maximum number of branches, number of leaves and total dry matter
(TDM) at all growth stages while B1 gave the reverse results. BARI Sharish 15
(V3) took the longest days to attain all the phonological stages while BARI Sharisa
9 (V1) took the lowest days. BARI Sharisa 15 (V3) produced the highest plant
height, number of branches, number of leaves and total dry matter (TDM) while
reverse results were obtained in case of BARI Sharisa 9 (V1). All the yield
parameters like number of siliqua plant-1, number of seeds siliqua-1, 1000 seeds
weight, seed yield (1.53 t ha-1), stover yield and HI were highest when the crop
was cultivated with 2.3 kg B ha-1 dose (B4). On the other hand, control treatment
gave the lowest results. In case of variety (V3), BARI Sharisa 15 produced the
highest value most of the yield components like seed yield (1.88 t ha-1), stover
yield and HI and the variety V1 (BARI Sharisa 9) produced the lowest yield and
yield components. The interaction of 2.3 kg B ha-1 with BARI Sharisa 15 (V3)
produced the highest value of all the yield components, seed yield (1.49 t ha-1),
stover yield and HI.
