Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the response of growth, yield and yield
contributing characteristics of soybean (Glycine max L.) varieties to GABA. The
experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Research Field, Hajee Mohammad Danesh
Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during the period from December, 2016 to
April, 2017. There are two treatments were used in this piece of research viz., GABA and
Soybean varieties. Three concentration level (G1= 0.0 µg L-1
, G2= 100 µg L-1 and G3=
200 µg L-1) of GABA were used as a factor A. Four varieties namely: V1= Binasoybean1, V2= Binasoybean-2, V3= Binasoybean-3 and V4= Binasoybean-4 were used as
planting materials in the present study. Two factors experiment was laid out in the
RCBD design where each treatment with three replications. Growth, yield, yield
contributing, and qualitative characteristics of soybean varieties were significantly
influenced by different concentration of GABA. Result revealed that of Binasoybean-3
and Binasoybean-1 significantly increased plant height and number of branches plant-1
with GABA @ 100 µg L-1. The highest number of pods plant-1, grains pod-1 and
maximum grain yield (2.12 t ha-1) were observed from V1. On the other hand, lowest
number of pod plant-1, pod length, number of grains pod-1, and grain yield (1.62 t ha-1)
were obtained from V4. Among the different concentrations of GABA, maximum
parameters such as highest number of pods plant-1, pod length, number of grains pod-1
and grain yield were significantly increased at G2. The highest grain yield (2.09 t ha-1)
was found at the concentration of GABA at G2. The lowest grain yield (1.60 t ha-1) was
gained at G1. The maximum grain yield (2.37 t ha-1) was acquired at the treatment
combination of V1G2 and the minimum (1.45 t ha-1) was recorded under the treatment
combination of V4G1. The effect of variety and GABA on different qualitative characters
viz., protein content (%), carbohydrate content (%) and oil content (%) were significant
in all varieties of soybean. All the qualitative characters (except protein content) were
found to increase significantly with the combination of V2G2. The present study revealed
that GABA would be applied for enhancing the yield attributes as well as yield and
quality of soybean varieties.
