Abstract
An experiment was carried out in the laboratory of the department of
Physiology and Pharmacology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and
Technology University, Dinajpur and Upazila Livestock Office, Palashbari,
Gaibandha, during the period from July to November/2012. 45 chickens
were randomly divided into 3 groups (A, B and C). Group A was kept for
control, Group B was treated with Piperazine citrate (Pipervet®) and Group
C was treated with the aqueous extract of Pineapple leaves. These two were
screened for assessment their comparative efficacy against ascariasis in
indigenous chickens. Pineapple leaves was used at a dose of 1gm/kg bwt for
seven consecutive days and piperazine citrate at a dose of 200mg/kg bwt as a
single dose. Efficacy was recorded as compared to control on the basis of
fecal egg count. Piperazine citrate showed 100% efficacy within 14 days of
treatment. On the other hand, Pineapple leaves showed 80% efficacy on 28"
day of treatment. Post mortem worm count revealed that pineapple leaves
were considerable effective against worm burden. Hematological analysis
revealed that the aqueous extract of leaves did not show any adverse on
blood parameter of treated chickens.
