An experiment was conducted at the Agronomic research field, Hajee Mohamed Danesh Science and Technology University, HSTU during the period from May to August 2016 to find out the effect of variety and nitrogen on grain yield and yield contributing characteristics of sesame. The experiment included four varieties viz. BARI til-3, BARI til-4, Binatil-2 and Binatil-3, three levels of nitrogen viz. 90, 120 and 150 kg N ha-1 respectively. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data recorded were plant height, branch number plant-1 , number of pods plant-1, pod length, number of grains pod-1, 1000 seed weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. All the data were statistically analyzed and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Significant variations among varieties were observed for all the characters including grain yield and yield contributing characteristics. Among the varieties, Binatil3 and BARI til-4 performed significantly better than other varieties in respect of all the yield contributing characters of sesame measured. It was observed that, there was significant difference in grain yield among sesame varieties. BARI til-4 and Binatil-3 yielded higher grain yield (1.42 t ha-1) and (1.31 t ha-1) respectively than other varieties. All the characteristics of sesame were significantly influenced by levels of nitrogen but, BARI til-4 and Binatil-3 responded better than the other varieties. The maximum grain yield (1.45 t ha-1) was obtained from 120 kg N ha-1 whereas the lowest (1.07 t ha-1) was obtained from 90 kg N ha-1. The maximum straw yield (3.27 t ha-1) was recorded in 150 kg N ha-1 although the lowest (2.54 t ha-1) was recorded in 90 kg N ha-1. Effect of interaction of variety and nitrogen level was statistically significant on yield attributing characters of sesame. The highest grain yield (1.65 t ha-1) was observed in BARI til-4 with 120 kg N ha-1 while the lowest grain yield (0.81 t ha-1) was observed in BARI til-3 with 90 kg N ha-1. On the other hand the highest straw yield (3.35 t ha-1) was observed in Binatil-3 with 150 kg N ha-1 which was statistically similar with BARI til-4 with 120 kg N ha-1 (3.29 t ha-1) while the lowest straw yield (2.17 t ha-1) was observed in BARI til-3 with 90 kg N ha-1. Interaction effect had significant effect on number of pods plant-1 , number of seeds pod-1, 1000-grain weight, biological yield (t ha-1), harvest index (%) of sesame. From the present study it should be concluded that the highest grain yield (1.65 t ha-1) was obtained from in BARI til-4 with 120 kg N ha-1 .en_US
