An experiment was conducted at research field and laboratory in the Department of Crop Physiology and Ecology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, during the period of 20th November 2016 to 16th March 2017 to study the effects of varietes and different planting directions on growth and yield of wheat. Five varieties viz. V1=BARI Gom-26, V2=BARI Gom27, V3=BARI Gom-28, V4=BARI Gom-29 and V5=BARI Gom-30 and two planting directions viz. G1= North- South, G2=East-West were included in this study. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results showed that varieties had significant effects on plant height, total tillers hill-1, number of effective tillers hill-1, number of noneffective tillers hill-1, grain yield, TDM, LAI, CGR, RGR, NAR and biological yield. The highest plant height (109 cm), total tillers hill-1 (6.83), number of effective tillers hill-1 (6.43), number of non-effective tillers hill-1 (0.41), spike length (16.87 cm), leaf area (1858.29 cm 2 ) hill-1, relative leaf water content (136.66), moisture retention capacity (73.02%) and canopy temperature (21.93 C) were observed in V5 (BARI Gom- 30). The maximum TDM, LAI, CGR, RGR, 1000-grain weight (55.63 gm), grain yield (3.55 t ha-1) and bilogical yield (7.99 t ha-1) were recorded from V5 (BARI Gom-30). Different planting directions also showed significant effects on most of the parameters. The highest TDM, RGR and NAR were obtained from G1 (North-South) planting direction. The highest grain yield (3.11 t ha-1) was recorded from G1 (North-South) while the lowest grain yield (2.80 t ha-1) was recorded from G2 (East-West). The highest grain yield (4.10 t ha-1) was obtained from G1×V5 while the lowest grain yield (2.70 t t ha-1) were obtained from G2×V2. Results of the present study revealed that N-S with BARI Gom-30 combination was the best for obtaining maximum grain yield of wheat.en_US
