Channa striata, commonly known as the striped snakehead, is a high-value freshwater &#13;
species with significant aquaculture potential in Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. However, &#13;
its natural populations in Bangladesh are declining due to habitat degradation, &#13;
overexploitation, and inadequate aquaculture practices. Despite its commercial importance, &#13;
large-scale seed production remains underdeveloped owing to critical gaps in species &#13;
identification, reproductive management, induced breeding, and larval rearing &#13;
protocols.This dissertation aims to bridge these gaps and establish a scientific basis for the &#13;
sustainable aquaculture of C. striata in Bangladesh. Four sequential studies were conducted: &#13;
(i) species identification and phylogenetic analysis using geometric morphometrics and COI &#13;
gene-based DNA barcoding; (ii) assessment of growth and reproductive biology of wild &#13;
populations from the Atrai River system; (iii) standardization of hormonal induction &#13;
protocols using carp pituitary extract (CPE) and Buserelin; and (iv) evaluation of weaning &#13;
strategies for hatchery-produced larvae using Artemia, fish paste, and formulated feeds. The &#13;
results confirmed clear species delineation among native and exotic Channa spp., with &#13;
phylogenetic divergence supported by both morphometric and molecular data. Wild C. &#13;
striata exhibited seasonal reproduction, with peak spawning from April to July. Induced &#13;
breeding trials demonstrated that both CPE (80 mg/kg) and Buserelin (0.80 µg/kg) &#13;
effectively stimulated spawning. Larval weaning experiments revealed that initial live &#13;
feeding with Artemia followed by gradual transition to formulated diets ensured high &#13;
survival and growth, while water quality, particularly ammonia concentration, played a &#13;
critical role. Overall, this research provides a comprehensive framework for the &#13;
conservation and aquaculture of C. striata by integrating taxonomic validation, reproductive &#13;
biology, induced breeding, and larval nutrition. The findings are expected to support the &#13;
development of standardized hatchery protocols, contribute to wild stock conservation, and &#13;
promote commercial-scale seed production in Bangladesh. Future research should &#13;
emphasize selective breeding, advanced larval nutrition, and field-level application of the &#13;
proposed protocols for long-term sustainability.

A survey was conducted to assess the current status of carp fattening and the socio&#13;
economic situation of fish farmers in three upazilas of Natore district: Natore Sadar, &#13;
Singra, and Gurudaspur. The study took place from July 2022 to June 2023 and involved &#13;
gathering information from 80 fish farmers through interview with structured &#13;
questionnaires. Results showed that 40% farmers were within the 41–50 age groups, with &#13;
65% belonging to nuclear families and 35% to joint families. In terms of education, most &#13;
farmers (30%) had secondary-level education, while only 14.5% were illiterate. The &#13;
annual income of a significant portion of respondents ranged from BDT 1,00,000 to &#13;
2,00,000, making up 33.34% of the sample. All farmers had access to electricity, and &#13;
41.67% were members of organizations like ASA and BRAC. The study found that the &#13;
majority of ponds (58.5%) in the study area were between 0.5-1.0 acres in size, with an &#13;
average depth of 1.5 meter. Additionally, 70% of the ponds used for fish culture were &#13;
owned by the farmers themselves, while the remaining 30% were leased. Groundwater &#13;
was the primary water source for 78% of farmers, with 42% exchanging water as needed. &#13;
Most farmers (57.63%) prepared their ponds and applied specific amounts of salt, TSP, &#13;
and urea per hectare. Growth promoters were used by 88% of farmers to enhance carp &#13;
growth, with various probiotics such as Safe gut, Navio plus, Protox aqua, Aquaphoto, &#13;
and Dellomax being employed. Indian major carp and exotic carp were the preferred &#13;
species for cultivation, experiencing only fish lice as a constraint during the nine to ten &#13;
months of cultivation. 63.33% farmers used commercial feeds. The main obstacles &#13;
identified were a lack of scientific knowledge, insufficient high-quality seeds and feeds, &#13;
funding shortage and inadequate marketing facilities.

In this study, the abundances and characteristics of microplastics in different tissues of three &#13;
species of wild crabs (Scylla olivacea, Portunus pelagicus, and Portonus sanguinolentus) &#13;
were investigated across three important fishing grounds (Chattagram, Cox’s Bazar and Saint &#13;
Martin Island region) of Bangladesh.  Each region consists of three distinct fishing grounds. &#13;
The result of the study showed that the highest detection of microplastics was recorded in &#13;
Cox’s Bazar followed by Saint Martin and Chattagram. The crab species Scylla olivacea and &#13;
Portunus pelagicus were most abundant in Cox’s Bazar and Chattagram while Portonus &#13;
sanguinolentus in Cox’s Bazar and Saint Martin Island. The microplastics size was also &#13;
varied among the crab samples. Comparatively larger microplastics were recorded in the crab &#13;
samples in Chattagram region. Black coloured microplastics were the most prominent in gill &#13;
and guts of the samples (45.45% and 42.37%, respectively). Among various types of shapes &#13;
about (56.92%) of thread was most abundance in gill where thread was (53.33%) in gut. The &#13;
50% gill tissue showed fragment microplastics followed by microbead (6.25%). The 49.18% &#13;
gut tissue showed microbead microplastics followed by fibre (8.20%). Overall, the study &#13;
reported that the distribution pattern, abundance, size, color and shape of microplastics in the &#13;
studied crab samples which will ultimately help the biologist to get insight into the plastic &#13;
pollution in marine ecosystems by taking crabs as model species.

The present study was conducted to know the current state and future potential of biofloc &#13;
technology in the Panchagarh district that cover five upazilas such as Panchagarh sadar, &#13;
Tentulia, Debiganj, Boda and Atwari  starting from July to December 2022. The study &#13;
was done by analyzing socio-demographic characteristics, farming practices, and &#13;
challenges faced by local farmers. Data were collected from 55 biofloc farmers through &#13;
surveys and interviews. The findings revealed that 62.5% of respondents were young &#13;
farmers aged between 21-30 years, with 40.5% having graduated from formal education &#13;
systems. The majority (80.58%) hailed from nuclear families, while 74.54% did not hold &#13;
any organizational membership. Fish culture (30.58%) and biofloc farming (20.32%) &#13;
were identified as major occupations. Biofloc culture was predominantly practiced by &#13;
farmers with 7 to 12 months of experience (51.58%), although 70.35% lacked formal &#13;
training before initiating farming. Most farms (56.36%) operated on areas less than one &#13;
decimal, with 55.58% having one or two tanks constructed primarily from cement &#13;
(83.63%). Groundwater was the main water source (92.48%), and partial water exchange &#13;
practices were widely adopted. Farmers used synthetic probiotics such as Pond Care &#13;
(40.8%), Protox Aqua (22.81%), Aqua photo (17.32%), Dellomax (10.94%) and &#13;
Ecopond (6.13%). The preferred tank shapes were rectangular (50.85%) and circular &#13;
(35.6%), with a depth ranging between 4 to 6 feet. Despite challenges such as technical &#13;
(50%) and financial (22.75%) difficulties, biofloc farmers reported fish production rates &#13;
of 301-400 kg per cycle in 38.12% of cases. Diseases, particularly fungal (45.9%) and &#13;
bacterial (34.5%), posed significant threats. Total harvesting was preferred by 61.82% of &#13;
farmers, and most sales (52.72%) were made to wholesalers. The findings highlight the &#13;
promising but challenging adoption of biofloc technology in the district. Investments in &#13;
farmer training, disease management, and financial support can foster sustainable &#13;
aquaculture practices and enhance productivity in Panchagarh.
