Channa striata, commonly known as the striped snakehead, is a high-value freshwater &#13;
species with significant aquaculture potential in Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. However, &#13;
its natural populations in Bangladesh are declining due to habitat degradation, &#13;
overexploitation, and inadequate aquaculture practices. Despite its commercial importance, &#13;
large-scale seed production remains underdeveloped owing to critical gaps in species &#13;
identification, reproductive management, induced breeding, and larval rearing &#13;
protocols.This dissertation aims to bridge these gaps and establish a scientific basis for the &#13;
sustainable aquaculture of C. striata in Bangladesh. Four sequential studies were conducted: &#13;
(i) species identification and phylogenetic analysis using geometric morphometrics and COI &#13;
gene-based DNA barcoding; (ii) assessment of growth and reproductive biology of wild &#13;
populations from the Atrai River system; (iii) standardization of hormonal induction &#13;
protocols using carp pituitary extract (CPE) and Buserelin; and (iv) evaluation of weaning &#13;
strategies for hatchery-produced larvae using Artemia, fish paste, and formulated feeds. The &#13;
results confirmed clear species delineation among native and exotic Channa spp., with &#13;
phylogenetic divergence supported by both morphometric and molecular data. Wild C. &#13;
striata exhibited seasonal reproduction, with peak spawning from April to July. Induced &#13;
breeding trials demonstrated that both CPE (80 mg/kg) and Buserelin (0.80 µg/kg) &#13;
effectively stimulated spawning. Larval weaning experiments revealed that initial live &#13;
feeding with Artemia followed by gradual transition to formulated diets ensured high &#13;
survival and growth, while water quality, particularly ammonia concentration, played a &#13;
critical role. Overall, this research provides a comprehensive framework for the &#13;
conservation and aquaculture of C. striata by integrating taxonomic validation, reproductive &#13;
biology, induced breeding, and larval nutrition. The findings are expected to support the &#13;
development of standardized hatchery protocols, contribute to wild stock conservation, and &#13;
promote commercial-scale seed production in Bangladesh. Future research should &#13;
emphasize selective breeding, advanced larval nutrition, and field-level application of the &#13;
proposed protocols for long-term sustainability.

The present research was undertaken to estimate the length-weight relationship,&#13;
condition factors and food habits of Barilius bendelisis, Barilius barna and Barilius tileo.&#13;
Samples were collected monthly from Atrai river for six months from November 2015 to&#13;
April 2016. Monthly relationships between total length (TL) and body weight (BW) as&#13;
well as determination of growth pattern was performed for Barilius bendelisis, B. barna&#13;
and B. tileo separately. Among 243 individuals B. bendelisis were 57, B. barna were 102&#13;
and B. tileo were 84. The total length and body weight of B. bendelisis ranged from 7 to&#13;
15.6 cm and from 3.55 to 34.1 g respectively. The total length and body weight of B.&#13;
barna ranged from 4.9 to 7.9 cm and from 1.2 to 5.25 g respectively. The total length&#13;
and body weight of B. telio ranged from 6.2 to 10.8 cm and from 2.61 to 11.94 g&#13;
respectively. For B. bendelisis the generalized relationship of pooled data over the study&#13;
period was BW = 0.020TL2.77. The study revealed high values of coefficient of&#13;
determination in all months (r2&#13;
≥ 0.869). At 95% confidence limits the „b‟ value revealed&#13;
that the growth in January was isometric, and the growth in other months were&#13;
allometric. B. bendelisis exhibited a higher condition factors (K) value (1.245±0.084) in&#13;
February, 2016 and a lower K value (1.182±0.053) in April, 2016. For B. barna the&#13;
generalized relationship of pooled data over the study period was BW = 0.017TL2.76. The&#13;
study revealed high values of coefficient of determination in all months (r2&#13;
≥ 0.820). At&#13;
95% confidence limits the „b‟ value revealed that the growth in January and April were&#13;
isometric, and the growth in other months were allometric. B. barna exhibited a higher K&#13;
value (1.201±0.110) in February, 2016 and a lower K value (1.110±0.226) in January,&#13;
2016. For B. tileo the generalized relationship of pooled data over the study period was&#13;
BW= 0.026TL2.62. The study revealed high values of coefficient of determination in all&#13;
months (r2&#13;
≥ 0.833). At 95% confidence limits the „b‟ value revealed that the growth in&#13;
January was isometric, and the growth in other months were allometric. B. tileo exhibited&#13;
a higher K value (1.258±0.249) in February, 2016 and a lower K value (1.089±0.164) in&#13;
April, 2016. The higher and lower mean RLG ± standard deviation (S.D.) of B.&#13;
bendelisis in April and December were 2.01 ± 0.21 and 1.57 ± 0.17, respectively. The&#13;
higher and lower mean RLG ± standard deviation (S.D.) of B. barna in November and&#13;
January were 1.93±0.123 and 1.01±0.012, respectively. The higher and lower mean&#13;
RLG±standard deviation (S.D.) of B. tileo in April and November were 1.78±0.21 and&#13;
1.25±0.180, respectively. Finally it was concluded that they are omnivore feeder. The&#13;
present findings of length-weight relationship, condition factors and food habits of&#13;
Barilius spp. in Atrai river might be used in future analyses of other population&#13;
parameters and stock assessment of these valuable small indigenous species in&#13;
Bangladesh.

Cirrhinus reba known as Khorkia bata or Bhagna belongs to the family cyprinidae. A&#13;
study was conducted on the food habit of C. reba collected from Atrai river of Dinajpur&#13;
district for a period of 6 months from September, 2015 to February, 2016. Different&#13;
items of food were determined by the frequency of occurrence method. It was found that&#13;
debris (22.41%) was the most dominant food item in the gut of C. reba followed by mud&#13;
(18.56%) and sand (14.97%). The other food items were phytoplankton (30.85%) and&#13;
zooplankton (4.31%). It was omnivorus fish with relative length of gut was (5.36 ± 1.22).&#13;
Another experiment was conducted on the fecundity and GSI from March to August,&#13;
2015. Gonadosomatic index was calculated and the fecundity was determined by&#13;
gravimetric method. The highest gonadosomatic index (37.38 ± 2.31) was found in the&#13;
month of July. The lowest fecundity 406.67 was recorded in the fish having 16.3 cm&#13;
length and 39.83 g body weight. The highest fecundity (167325) was recorded in the fish&#13;
having 19.6 cm length and 93.3 g body weight. The fecundity was found to increase with&#13;
the increase total length following the equation, F = 0.046 TL + 2.339 (r = 0.645) and the&#13;
fecundity was also found to increase with the increase of body weight following the&#13;
equation, F = 0.262 BW + 1.231 (r = 0.934). It was also found that the fecundity was&#13;
increasing with equation, F = 0.700 OW - 4.817 (r = 0.853). The relationship between&#13;
fecundity and total length, body weight, and ovary weight were found to be linear and&#13;
significant. The investigation revealed some aspects of feeding and reproductive biology&#13;
of the threatened fish C. reba. Further details investigation including histology is high&#13;
required for the feeding and reproductive biology of C. reba.
